Stump Grinding

Picture of a stump grinder working on a stumpStump grinding in progress
Stump grinding is a really common procedure in which a stump grinder, a large machine that does exactly what the name says, grinds the stump until it is pretty much buried just underneath the surface of the earth. How the stump grinder works is by moving back and forth along the stump, chipping away 2 inches at a time until the stump is entirely gone.

Because no one wants to look at stump remains, even under the earth, we cover it with topsoil or sod, which may be left there or may be used to plant some grass. Because the roots of the previous stump are still in underneath, you will not be able to plant much of a tree there, unless you plan on moving five feet away from where the stump was to plant that tree.

Also, if you plan on undergoing construction or starting a building development, stump grinding is not a viable way to clear space, because the underground root system may cause damage to the foundation of the building project.

After the stump grinder removes the stump and dwindles it down to a pile of mulch, we allow you to have the mulch to pour onto your garden with your plants. If you prefer to not do so, we will take the mulch away and dispose of it.

Full Tree Stump Removals

Full stump removals are exactly that...full stump removals. The word "full" means the stump and the underlying roots. This is vastly different procedure and is extremely labor-intensive. The entire stump is removed while having the roots attached before any disposals are done. This type of procedure is affected by cost, and because we are removing the roots, we have to take all the factors into account. For example, the soil type (ie roots embedded in rocky soil), the wood hardness, and the location of the stump are all factors. If you plan on doing any developmental or building work, you will most likely need the stump with the roots removed.

Other Options for Stump Removals

Other options for stump removal include the ten year rotting agent method and twenty year watchful waiting. Essentially, we purchase rotting chemicals and drill them into your stump, add water, and then wait ten years. The other option is to do nothing and wait twenty years. The timeframe may vary depending on the species of the tree.
